Nécrologie de Richard Joseph Denis

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce Richard Joseph Denis “Rick”, age 66, of Russell, Ontario, passed away peacefully at home on October 12, 2024, with his wife and daughters by his side, after a short but hard-fought battle with lung cancer. Rick approached his diagnosis with his acclaimed grit, determination, and stoicism. He was the most loyal, supportive, and loving husband to his wife of almost 46 years, Michele (née Dunphy). He was the adored and beloved father of two daughters, Rachelle (Blainne Blaedow Jr.) and Danielle (Tyler Brazeau), who will forever cherish his unconditional love, support, and mentorship.

 

Rick was a man of great strength and integrity with a mischievous sense of humor. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbours. He was so very proud of his daughters and supported them in every way possible, from school projects and sports practices to university commutes and life lessons, instilling in them a “can do” attitude and a willingness to embrace opportunity and adventure.

 

A consummate gentleman with a strong sense of duty, Rick had an inexhaustible supply of energy and an incredible work ethic. He was a very capable man, excelling in everything from home repairs to technology fixes. He loved fishing and animals – a passion he shared with his daughters. He enjoyed golfing, watching hockey and football, and travelling with his wife. He was a seasoned traveler and had been to many destinations across Canada and the world throughout his working career. Above all, he was a devoted family man, caring for his parents and in-laws, being a role model for his daughters, and the best friend and soulmate to his wife.

 

His family is incredibly proud of all that Rick achieved and contributed throughout his career. He started his career working for financial institutions before joining the Canada Revenue Agency as a tax collector and rising through the ranks over a 32-year career to retire as a Director General. He was a dedicated, hard-working and well-respected public servant who believed passionately in his work. True to character, Rick only briefly retired before continuing to work as a consultant for the Department of Inland Revenue in Nassau, Bahamas for several years where he put his energy and expertise to good use.

 

Rick was predeceased by his wonderful and loving parents, Alban Denis (2007) and Yvette Denis (née Marleau) (2013), his special father-in-law Donn Dunphy (2018); and his beloved standard poodle Bronson (2014). He is survived by his brother Charles Denis (Wendy); his nephew Ryan (Josée) and niece Ashley (Brad); and his great nephews Jacob and Olivier. He will be missed by his mother-in-law Gisele Dunphy (Donn); his brothers-in-law Richard Dunphy (Anne-Marie) and Robert Dunphy (Julie); his sister-in-law Nicole Travers (Dave); his nieces and nephews Trish (Duncan), Ed, Eva, Alexia, Kayla, Connor; his great nephew Wesley and great niece Lilly; as well as many friends and co-workers.

 

The family would like to say a heartfelt thank you to the many doctors of the oncology and palliative care teams at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus (to name but a few, Dr. Sara Moore, Dr. David Tiberi, Dr. Miki Lackman, Dr. Patrick Villeneuve, Dr. Rayan Delbani), and the many wonderful nurses and health aides who took care of him throughout his six-week hospital stay. A special thank you to Melanie, Melissa, Genevieve and everyone with the community palliative care team for the care and support provided to Rick and his family at home. In addition, the family sends heartfelt thanks to his family physician, Dr. Shamidah Noorani, for her compassion and time spent with Rick at home, as well as Dr. Archibald for his assistance.

 

A private interment for immediate family will be held at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Cemetery in Russell, Ontario. The family welcomes you to share stories and memories of Rick on this memorial page. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation or the Ottawa Humane Society in memory of Rick would be most appreciated.

C'est avec une profonde tristesse et le cœur brisé que nous annonçons que Richard Joseph Denis « Rick », âgé de 66 ans, de Russell, Ontario, est décédé paisiblement à son domicile le 12 octobre 2024, avec son épouse et ses filles à ses côtés, après une courte mais bataille acharnée contre le cancer du poumon. Rick a abordé son diagnostic avec son courage, sa détermination et son stoïcisme. Il était le mari le plus fidèle, le plus solidaire et le plus aimant de son épouse depuis près de 46 ans, Michele (née Dunphy). Il était le père adoré et bien-aimé de deux filles, Rachelle (Blainne Blaedow Jr.) et Danielle (Tyler Brazeau), qui chériront à jamais son amour inconditionnel, son soutien et son mentorat.

 

Rick était un homme d'une grande force et d'une grande intégrité, doté d'un sens de l'humour espiègle. Il était toujours prêt à donner un coup de main à sa famille, à ses amis et à ses voisins. Il était très fier de ses filles et les soutenait de toutes les manières possibles, des projets scolaires et pratiques sportives aux déplacements universitaires et leçons de vie, leur inculquant une attitude positive et une volonté de saisir les opportunités et l'aventure.

 

Une homme accompli doté d'un sens aigu du devoir, Rick possédait une réserve d'énergie inépuisable et une éthique de travail incroyable. C'était un homme très compétent, excellant dans tout, des réparations domiciliaires aux solutions technologiques. Il aimait la pêche et les animaux – une passion qu'il partageait avec ses filles. Il aimait jouer au golf, regarder le hockey et le football et voyager avec sa femme. Il était un voyageur chevronné et avait visité de nombreuses destinations au Canada et dans le monde tout au long de sa carrière professionnelle. Par-dessus tout, il était un père de famille dévoué, prenant soin de ses parents et de sa belle-famille, étant un modèle pour ses filles et le meilleur ami et âme sœur de sa femme.

 

Sa famille est incroyablement fière de tout ce que Rick a accompli et apporté tout au long de sa carrière. Il a débuté sa carrière en travaillant pour des institutions financières avant de se joindre à l'Agence du revenu du Canada en tant que percepteur d'impôts et de gravir les échelons au cours d'une carrière de 32 ans pour prendre sa retraite en tant que directeur général. C'était un fonctionnaire dévoué, travailleur et très respecté qui croyait passionnément en son travail. Fidèle à son caractère, Rick n'a pris sa retraite que brièvement avant de continuer à travailler pendant plusieurs années comme consultant pour le ministère des Finances intérieures à Nassau, aux Bahamas, où il a mis à profit son énergie et son expertise.

 

Rick est prédécédé par ses merveilleux et aimants parents, Alban Denis (2007) et Yvette Denis (Marleau) (2013), son beau-père spécial Donn Dunphy (2018); et son caniche standard bien-aimé Bronson (2014). Il laisse dans le deuil son frère Charles Denis (Wendy); son neveu Ryan (Josée) et sa nièce Ashley (Brad); et ses petits-neveux Jacob et Olivier. Il manquera sa belle-mère Gisele Dunphy (Donn); ses beaux-frères Richard Dunphy (Anne-Marie) et Robert Dunphy (Julie); sa belle-sœur Nicole Travers (Dave); ses neveux et nièces Trish (Duncan), Ed, Eva, Alexia, Kayla, Connor; son petit-neveu Wesley et sa petite-nièce Lilly; ainsi que de nombreux amis et collègues de travail.

 

La famille désire remercier chaleureusement les nombreux médecins des équipes d'oncologie et de soins palliatifs du Campus Général de l'Hôpital d'Ottawa (pour ne nommer que ceux-là, Dr. Sara Moore, Dr. David Tiberi, Dr. Miki Lackman, Dr. Patrick Villeneuve, Dr. Rayan Delbani), ainsi que les nombreux et formidables infirmiers et aides-soignants qui ont pris soin de lui tout au long de son séjour à l'hôpital de six semaines. Un merci spécial à Mélanie, Melissa, Geneviève et à tous les membres de l'équipe de soins palliatifs communautaires pour les soins et le soutien prodigués à Rick et à sa famille à la maison. De plus, la famille remercie chaleureusement son médecin de famille, le Dr. Shamidah Noorani, pour sa compassion et le temps passé avec Rick à la maison, ainsi que le Dr. Archibald pour son aide.

 

L'inhumation privée de la famille immédiate aura lieu au cimetière Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal à Russell, Ontario.
